Malted Hot Chocolate

4.4 from 539 cooks

Melted chocolate and malted milk powder blend into a thick hot chocolate, served with marshmallows on top and cookies on the side for dunking.

Malted milk powder is the trick that separates this hot chocolate from a basic mug of cocoa, adding a toasty, slightly nutty background note. Melting real chocolate into the milk instead of relying on cocoa powder alone gives the drink more body. Set out a few cookies for dunking, since this one is thick enough to hold up to it.

Method

Tap a number to mark a step done
  1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until small bubbles form around the edge, about 4 minutes.

  2. Add the chopped chocolate and whisk until it is fully melted and the mixture looks smooth and glossy.

  3. Whisk in the malted milk powder, sugar, and salt, then continue heating for another 2 minutes, stirring the mixture often.

  4. Taste the hot chocolate carefully and adjust the sweetness with a bit more sugar if it still needs it.

  5. Pour the finished hot chocolate into a mug and top it generously with the mini marshmallows before serving warm.

  6. Serve immediately with the cookies arranged alongside the mug so you can dunk them while it is still hot.

Kitchen note

Chop the chocolate finely before adding it; smaller pieces melt evenly into the hot milk instead of leaving stubborn lumps at the bottom of the mug.
