Classic Vanilla Milkshake

4.7 from 634 cooks

Vanilla ice cream blended with milk until thick, drizzled with chocolate syrup and finished with whipped cream for a straightforward, diner-style treat.

A milkshake this simple only works if the ratio of ice cream to milk is right, thick enough to need a straw with some effort but not so thick it clogs one. A drizzle of chocolate syrup around the inside of the glass before pouring adds flavor to every sip, not just the top. Whipped cream finishes the whole thing off.

  1. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of the chocolate syrup around the inside of a tall glass, letting it run down in streaks.

  2. Combine the ice cream, milk, remaining chocolate syrup, and vanilla extract together in a blender until ready to mix.

  3. Blend on low speed for 15 to 20 seconds, just until smooth and thick; avoid overblending, which thins the shake out.

  4. Pour the milkshake into the prepared glass, using a spoon to help move the thick mixture along smoothly.

  5. Top the milkshake with whipped cream and an extra drizzle of chocolate syrup before serving with a straw.

Kitchen note

Chill the glass in the freezer for 10 minutes before drizzling the syrup; a cold glass keeps the milkshake thick for longer once it is poured.
