Classic Banana Split Sundae

4.4 from 120 cooks

A split banana piled with three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, and a cherry on top, the diner classic made at home.

A banana split does not need a recipe so much as good assembly order, since everything is either store-bought or quick to make ahead. Splitting the banana lengthwise gives you a stable base for three scoops of ice cream and all the toppings. Build it fast and serve immediately before anything melts.

  1. Split each banana lengthwise with a paring knife and lay the halves along the sides of two shallow serving dishes.

  2. Place a scoop each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream between the banana halves in each dish, keeping the scoops separate.

  3. Drizzle the chocolate sauce generously over all three scoops of ice cream while it is still cold enough to hold its shape.

  4. Top each sundae with a swirl of whipped cream, followed by a generous scattering of chopped walnuts across the top.

  5. Finish each dish with two maraschino cherries on top and serve right away with long spoons before anything starts to melt.

Kitchen note

Chill the serving dishes in the freezer for 10 minutes beforehand so the ice cream holds its shape longer once the toppings go on.
